About the Program

“Battle of the Books” events are reading incentive programs held in schools across the country. Students are introduced to selected books by librarians and teachers and then read the books to prepare for the competition. In Kent, books are selected from recent award nominees and reading lists, ensuring students are reading quality literature.

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapp’s Battle of the Books program is open to all students in 4th and 5th grade, and students form teams of between 2 and 4 members. Teams are created within individual classrooms so that students can easily meet and discuss the books with their other team members. Teams are encouraged to read as many of the selected books as possible but allows teams to divide up the books however they see fit. Students may begin reading books from the Battle of the Books list as early as they would like so that each team is ready for the competition which begins in May each year.

At the Battle of the Books competition, teams are asked a series of questions about each of the books on the list, competing to see which team recalls the most information from the books. The competition is broken up into 4 distinct rounds which happen over the last 4 weeks of May. The first round is the classroom competition where teams compete against other teams within their own class. The second round is the grade-level competition where the winning team from each class competes against the winners from the other classes in their grade. The third round is the school-wide competition where the winning 4th grade team and 5th grade team face off to crown the school champions for the year. The final round is the district competition where the top team from each elementary vies for the title of District Champion.

Final Round Event

We are excited to announce that the final round of Battle of the Books will be held on Thursday, June 6^th from 1:30pm to 3:00pm. Elementary students from across the district will face off in a fully remote district competition being hosted and streamed live in Microsoft Teams. The teams from each school will participate from their building, answering questions about the 10 Battle of the Books titles that they’ve been reading and preparing for all year long.
