The for English Language Arts represent the next generation of K–12 standards designed to prepare all students for success in college, career, and life by the time they graduate from high school.
These expectations for reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language guide classroom instruction progressing from Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12. Designing instruction and assessments aligned to Common Core Standards is an ongoing focus for our teachers and administrators.?Graduation requirements and all course options are detailed in the Course Catalog.

Elementary (Grades Pre-K-5)
Resources
Following an extensive literacy review, we introduced new ELA curriculum in 2022-23 with a group of nine diverse pilot schools. The pilot schools and Instructional Materials Council recommended this curriculum for district adoption. The School Board approved Amplify curriculum with resources aligned to the Science of Reading and Common Core State Standards in the spring of 2023.
Grade K-5 English Language Arts: Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA)
Grade K-5 Spanish Language Arts: Amplify Caminos
Elementary students have 90 minutes of core literacy instruction and 30 minutes of intervention/enrichment group time daily.
Assessments
We use assessments to measure how students are progressing with the following:
- Foundational Skills—Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, and Fluency
- Reading Literature
- Reading Informational Text
- Writing
- Speaking and listening
- Language
Students in grades K-5 are evaluated using the i-Ready Reading Assessment and Amplify mClass Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Learning Skills (DIBELS). Students in grades 3-5 also take the Smarter Balanced ELA Test (SBA).

Secondary students have one period of English Language Arts daily. They are evaluated using teacher and district created pre and post-assessments for each unit of study. Students also take iReady or SBA interim assessments and the Smarter Balanced ELA Test (SBAC).
