Family Climate Survey Results

  • Background

In June 2023 the Kent School District sent out a Family Climate Survey to all families with students enrolled in ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapp schools. This survey asks families to evaluate multiple statements about their child’s school relating to safety, learning environment, community engagement, and more.

The Kent School District has conducted climate surveys for more than 10 years. The questions on this survey remained the same as the last survey for year-to-year comparison purposes. Families had 10 days to complete the survey. About 18% of ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapp families responded to the survey, or 2,862 out of 16,214 families.

We also gave a Staff Climate Survey in June of 2023; results can be found here.

    Current Context & Considerations

    • More families took this survey than last school year. This may reflect a return to a typical response rate.
    • Respondents, on average, put school safety as their highest priority for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. This was the second year this response was ranked the highest priority for families.
    • The results were, overall, more positive than last year, but aligned to the 2020-2021 results, which may reflect the context of the survey administration last year.
    • The 2021-2022 Family Climate Survey was administered shortly after the tragedy in Uvalde, Texas, and there was a national conversation focused on safety in public schools.

Family Priorities for 2023-2024

Families were asked to rank the most important topics for the next school year. Most families ranked Safe and Secure Schools as their highest priority and the 2023 Bond as their lowest priority. This is the second year that a ranked priorities question was posed to families, and it was the second year that Safe and Secure Schools was ranked as the highest priority.

The chart below shows the breakout of rankings for each topic. 1st is most important for the following school year; 5th is the least important.

Family Responses Percent Change from Spring 2022 to Spring 2023

In the questions below, families were asked about how they felt about various statements related to their child’s school. Their responses were scored along a Likert Scale as follows: Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Neither Agree nor Disagree, Agree, Strongly Agree.

The chart below shows the survey items with the greatest change in the percent of families who responded positively to each question. The positivity of a response is calculated by combining the Strongly Agree, Agree, and half of the Neither Agree nor Disagree responses.

Overall, the 2023 Family Climate Survey garnered more positive responses, suggesting a rebound from the more negative responses over the prior year. Several of the survey items with the greatest change reflect families' increasing opportunities to engage with their child's school. This coincides with fewer families reporting barriers that prevent their participation (the survey item with the least positive response).

The questions below were limited to questions with a percent change greater than ±5.0%.
