ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapp

The district is recruiting current ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapp high school students to serve as mentors for our fifth-grade outdoor school experience. Starting in January and continuing throughout the year, all fifth-grade students in the district will have the opportunity to attend a 3-day/2-night experiential learning activity. As part of this experience, ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapp high school students are needed to chaperone cabins, help teach lessons, and serve as mentors to fifth graders. High school students will attend a training weekend and be transported to the outdoor learning site the afternoon before the elementary students arrive. This is considered an excused absence for our high school students although they will be expected to make up any work missed while serving as mentors.  

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapp believes high school students serving as mentors will be beneficial not only for fifth-grade students but for the mentors as well. Ways in which high school students benefit from the experience include:  

• They will earn CTE credit for attending mentor training and serving during one session of outdoor school.  
• Students who help teach science and social emotional standards build their own knowledge of both.  
• Mentoring is a positive experience for both the mentors and mentees.  
• Mentoring and community services hours are a positive addition to college and job applications.
